Strong Female Characters

I was supposed to be writing a review tonight, but I can’t get my mind into it because of a very strong-willed little girl.  My daughter is refusing to settle down and sleep despite our best efforts.  We all have to wake up early tomorrow, and she’s being a stubborn little child that will not listen.  So, that brings me to this post’s topic, strong female characters.

There are a lot of books that have rather weak female characters, such as the Twilight series, while others have very strong female characters, such as Pern or The Wheel of Time.  I prefer strong female characters.  In fact, some of my favourite characters are female.

One of my early favourites was Sallah Telgar of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonsdawn, which I read when I was in university.  More recent favourites include Daenerys Targaryen and Arya Stark from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, and Aenea from Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons.

It’s not just books, but TV and movies, too.  Buffy (the vampire slayer) kicked butt, Jadzia Dax (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) was a favourite of mine, and who doesn’t love Xena?  Makes me want to pull out my DS9 DVDs and watch them.

I like strong female characters because they show that women can be strong.  I have a daughter, and I want her to grow up to be assertive, show the boys that she can do anything they can, and become successful.

So what do you think?  Do you like strong female characters?  Who is your favourite?
