If you’re a fan of Star Trek, you’ll remember a very funny scene from Star Trek IV in which Scotty introduces transparent aluminum to someone. Anyone remember “Hello computer” from that scene?
Well, transparent aluminum is here. Kind of. It’s called aluminum oxynitride, and is a clear aluminum ceramic, as opposed to a transparent metallic aluminum. It’s commercially available through Surmet Corporation. Check out this article. It includes a picture.
The more I see Star Trek technologies actually get developed, the more I think Gene Roddenberry was a time traveller who lived in the time of Star Trek, and introduced it to us to help guide us into a future like Star Trek. Well, maybe not. But it is incredible how we keep seeing things from the show become reality.
