Top 5 Must Read Fantasy and Sci-Fi Series

There are so many fantasy and science fiction series out there, I don’t know how I can read all of the ones I want to read. So, I just make a list of the top ones, and make sure I focus on them.

Here is my top 5 must read fantasy series list, in video form:

And my top 5 must read sci-fi series, also in video form:

What do you think of my lists? Any surprises?

What I’d like to know is what are your top 5 series, not just for fantasy and sci-fi. Let me know in the comments section.

  1. By all means read the Foundation series. It’s classic. (I’d focus on the original three volumes — Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation. Asimov later expanded the series in all directions, like a gradually diffusing ball of plasma, but the other associated books are secondary — aside from the positronic robot series, which is worth reading in its own right.)

I highly recommend the Vorkosigan saga. Bujold is the best author now writing SF, IMHO. Each book is pretty much independent, but I’d suggest starting with The Warrior’s Apprentice, which brings onstage the central character, Miles Naismith Vorkosigan. You could also begin chronologically (sort of) with Shards of Honor.

    Cheers!
