Pokemon Exercise

I keep walking, and I now have this.

I heard a guy walked 153 km and caught them all. I’ve gone 33 km. This is making so many people walk. It’s a good thing, right?

Pokemon WENT

My wife and I went for a long walk last night and today, and we collected Pokemon. Unfortunately, servers were unstable today, so we had some downtime. However, I was able to catch some good ones. I got a lot of Pidgeys, Ratattas, and Weedles, but I was able to do some evolving and powering up. I had several eggs hatch and I caught some decent strength Pokemon. I also made it to level 9. Here is my full collection. Keep in mind that I caught far more than these, but I sent a lot to the Professor so I could get candy to upgrade some Pokemon. And we probably walked well over 10 km.

And that is my collection. I still haven’t seen a Pikachu, though. I want to evolve both of my Eevees.

Do you have any good Pokemon? And are you an adult? Let me know in the comments below.

Pokemon Go Is Tempting

I’m not a Pokemon fan. But seeing how so many of my adult friends are now playing it, I’m quite surprised it’s become so popular with the older demographic.

The pros: It gets you outside, it makes you walk, and you get exercise.

The cons: You could walk into traffic, you could fall off a cliff, you could wander into Area 51.

I see the appeal of the game. I’ve tried Ingress, which is actually made by the same company as Pokemon Go, Niantic. I played Ingress quite a bit in Japan, but just got it on my new phone in Canada. There are no portals near the house. I’d have to walk at least 600 metres to get to one. I should try add some.

Like Ingress, Pokemon Go is an augmented reality game. You see something other people don’t. You have a mission, and you’re playing against or with other people. In Ingress, there are two factions, and it’s a war between the two. I’m one of the Enlightened, by the way. In Pokemon Go, I believe you have to choose a team, and you walk around to capture Pokemon, and you can battle in gyms. I’ve heard that some of the gyms have been inadvertently placed inside actual churches. Or are they trying to get people to go to church? I don’t know.

But it’s very tempting. The game isn’t available in Canada yet, though. Anyone want to play? Let me know in the comments below.

Ingress, the Augmented Reality RPG

I’ve always enjoyed role-playing games.  When I was a kid and teenager, I’d play them on Sega Game Gear and traditional paper and dice.  When I was in university, I played on a MUD.  When I was single in Japan, I played an MMORPG.  But now, we have a totally new kind of RPG, augmented reality.

These days, I don’t have time to play games that involve a lot of time and effort to play.  When I discovered Ingress, I thought that the concept was quite interesting.  There are two factions, the Enlightened and the Resistance.  The Enlightened are fighting to support the aliens who want to help us go further in our evolution.  The Resistance believe they just want to control our minds.  There are portals everywhere.  Portals are usually landmarks, public art, and so on.  There are more around densely populated areas or busy areas, and not so many in less busy areas.  Where I live, there aren’t many portals, but we can submit locations to open new ones.  Anyway, you want to make sure portals are on your side so you can link them together and create a kind of coverage area that collects Mind Units.  These Mind Units are what are used to keep score.  Here’s a screenshot of my area with a single Enlightened portal.

The circled arrow is my position, while the portal is toward the top.  As you can see, there are streets marked out.  This game was created by Google, and they obviously use a kind of overlay with Google Maps.  All the roads are already there, so the map is already made for the game.  This game is played worldwide

I’m only level 1, but I’ll be getting up to level 2 very soon.  I’m not sure how long I’ll play this, but I’ll see.  I have a lot of work to do.  I joined the Enlightened, and there’s one portal nearby.  However, there are several Resistance portals in my area, and they completely cover the Shonandai station area.  I guess I’ll have to try create some local portals.  I also need to advance in levels to have any hope of switching over any existing portals.  We’ll see how it goes.

Anyone else play it?
