Wonder Woman, Justice League, and Star Trek Discovery

San Diego Comic-Con has been giving some very interesting information in video form. I mean the DC Comics movies coming up.

First is the Wonder Woman movie, which has a very interesting looking trailer. Watch it below.

I’m really looking forward to this. Looks great! The other one is the Justice League movie. What they had available isn’t a trailer, but a collection of footage that they have available. And this is it:

But no Superman! (Please, no spoilers in the comments). However, it seems to be a bit more lighthearted than many of the more recent DC movies. I’m looking forward to see it, but I still need to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

And finally, some Star Trek news! The new TV series will be called Star Trek Discovery, and they have some test footage of the new starship. You can see it here. It looks like it’s post Star Trek VI, but before Star Trek: The Next Generation. The U.S.S. Discovery features an older style saucer section with a Klingon-inspired stardrive section. Looks interesting. I’m intrigued. It sounds like it takes place during the time of peace between the Federation and the Klingons, and there’s some exchange in technology. I’ve heard some people speculating that it may have a cloaking device, so it takes place before the banning of cloaking technology by the Federation.

Let me know what looks interesting to you in the comments below!

Ben Affleck as Batman?

I think that when Ben Affleck was announced as being the next Batman, most people were incredibly skeptical. I was worried that whenever I saw him as Bruce Wayne, I’d keep thinking that’s Ben Affleck, not Bruce Wayne. Well, after watching the trailers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I have to say that I’m rather optimistic about this now.

Everyone thought Michael Keaton would be a terrible Batman, since he did mostly comedy. But his Batman turned out to be my favourite. I also liked Val Kilmer’s Batman. The others after that? Well, I didn’t see Christian Bale’s, so I’m not sure how to react to him. But George Clooney was a terrible Batman.

The comments I’m seeing now about Ben Affleck’s Batman is that this is the comic book Batman, and it’s very good. The action, the attitude, it’s all Bruce Wayne and Batman from the comics and Arkham Knight video game. Looking forward to this!

Mission Statement – Books, Movies, and TV

This is the first part of the Mission Statement of this blog. This is what you can expect in the coming year and more. And it’s a pretty geeky Mission Statement!

When I started this blog, I wanted to focus on book reviews and my writing. So, I’d like to reiterate that book reviews are a major feature of this blog. However, that’s going to expand to movies and TV. And not just any movies and TV, but science fiction, fantasy, and superhero movies and TV!

Movies

I’m going to be doing a few challenges, as well as following very specific themes when reviewing movies. Here’s what you can expect to see:

  • Marvel and DC superhero movies
  • Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit
  • Star Wars
  • Star Trek (will be done along with the TV series in chronological order)
  • James Bond movies
  • Harry Potter
  • Transformers movies
  • Terminator movies
  • Alien movies
  • Jurassic Park movies
  • Robin Williams movies (my favourite actor, so I should do this)
  • And pretty much any science fiction or fantasy movie I can get my hands on.

Television Series

There are so many TV series I want to watch, and I will do reviews episode by episode. They will be brief, though. Don’t expect me to go into as much detail as I do with books.

  • All Star Trek TV series in chronological order
  • Battlestar Galactica (all series)
  • Doctor Who
  • Firefly
  • Xena
  • Hercules
  • Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis
  • Transformers
  • The Shannara Chronicles
  • The upcoming series based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy
  • Game of Thrones
  • Possibilities: The X-Files, Space: Above and Beyond, Earth 2

That’s a lot to watch, isn’t it? There may be more, it just depends on what I find. What are you looking forward to seeing? Any I missed that you think I should watch? Let me know in the comments.

The New Batman v Superman Trailer

Back when I was a kid, I watched the Superman movies religiously. I wore a cape! A Superman cape!

In 1989, I saw the Batman movie and thoroughly enjoyed Michael Keaton’s version of Batman, and Jack Nicholson’s Joker. Amazing stuff. I liked Val Kilmer’s Batman, too. But then things fell apart, and we had several mediocre to terrible Batman movies. And then came Christian Bale and his rendition, which I haven’t seen.

I did see Superman Returns, though. Not very satisfied with that one. Nor have I see Man of Steel yet, but I do know that the events in that movie lead up to this: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I have seen the trailers and teasers. I have seen Wonder Woman. And all of this brought back memories of a huge colouring book I had of the Justice League superheroes. I was a DC Comic superhero fan, not a Marvel superhero fan (except Spider-Man).

But then, last week, a new trailer came out. And here it is:

Let me just say that I’m a kid again. The final scene in this trailer had me excited. While the characters are different than my childhood heroes and villains, seeing all three of these superheroes on screen at the same time was amazing. Everyone raves about The Avengers, but The Justice League is where my heart is.

And thank you, Ben Affleck, for not overdoing the Batman voice like Christian Bale did. You definitely have the better voice. And Jesse Eisenberg is a wild Lex Luthor. This will be entertaining.

What did you think of the trailer?

The Marvel and DC Movie Challenge

With all the comic book hero movies coming out, I thought I’d add a new challenge. I’d like to watch every Marvel and DC Comics movie ever made. I don’t mean any TV movies or direct to video movies. Only theatrical ones.

I have some favourites. I loved the first couple of Superman movies with Christopher Reeve. I also really liked Michael Keaton’s version of Batman. The first couple of X-Men movies were pretty good, too.

Growing up, I was always a DC superhero fan. I loved Superman and Batman, but I was also interested in others that joined the Justice League. But then, I also liked Marvel’s Spiderman, and watched the old cartoon a lot. I’ll be interested in seeing if I like Marvel or DC movies better. I should keep score.

What’s your favourite and least favourite superhero movie?
