Planetarium Software

I found some really good free planetarium software. It’s called Stellarium. Today, I was able to use this software, but I’m going to download it and use it at home.

You see, I’m going to be using this software at work extensively. This should give you an idea about what I’m going to be doing. When I said I’ll be using my university degree in my job, I meant it. I’ll be educating people on astronomy and physics. But that’s not all. There’s something else I’m not telling you, and I think that will remain a secret for now. Sorry!

What I’ve been able to do with this software is look at stars, nebulae, galaxies, planets, and the Moon. I’ve looked at the movement of Jupiter’s moons over time, watched the Moon’s phases, and examine the night sky around 100,000 years in the past and future. There’s a lot more I can do, and I’ll explore it as much as I can before I start using it at work.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I’m finally using my university degree in a job! Do you use your degree in your job?

The Benefit of Making YouTube Videos

I’ve come to realise something about making daily YouTube videos. I’ve been speaking in front of a camera, and looking at my earliest videos, then my more recent ones, I see an improvement in my ability to speak. I’m becoming a better speaker. I’m feeling more comfortable speaking in front of a camera. And I think this will carry over to something very important.

You see, my job will involve me speaking in front of audiences, making science presentations and demonstrations. I need to be able to speak well, and in a friendly manner. The more I speak, the better I get. Thankfully, I’ll be talking about something I know well.

It’s funny, thinking back to when I was in school, I never would have imagined that nearly all of my jobs involve a lot of speaking. When I worked in the call centre, I had to speak a lot. Then I taught English in Japan, a job that required me to speak in front of groups. And now, I’m going to be speaking in front of larger groups mostly about physics and astronomy.

As I do more videos, I will improve. My videos will get better. And as I speak more in my job, my presentations will get better.

I surprised myself on Monday. I used to always just sit there and listen to most people talking. However, I tended to take the lead in some ways in conversations during my training. I wasn’t worried about talking in front of fifteen people. My manager even mentioned that I am the astronomy expert out of my group of trainees, so I’m the one to go to if there are any questions. This is definitely going to be interesting. This is the first time I’ve gone into a job where my degree is allowing me to be the “expert.”

Let’s see where this goes. This job may be one of my biggest opportunities for the future! And I have to thank YouTube videos for helping me improve my speaking and confidence.

I’m Tired

I’m really tired tonight. I’m not sure what made me tired, but it was a very busy day.

You see, I had my orientation and training for my new job today. Long commute, but it allows me to read a lot more. That’s good. The training and orientation were a lot of fun. Most relaxing and enjoyable training I’ve ever had. Everyone is very nice and the job looks very fun. I’m looking forward to working and the rest of my training this week and next week. It’s definitely going to be interesting.

But was it the training that made me tired? Maybe it was the bus ride. There was a lot of information, and I still have a lot to read. That could’ve made me tired, too.

I still have two videos to edit and post, as well as another blog post. Time to get busy!

Three Days Until a Big Change

Today, I went to the police. I didn’t see any police officers, though. I went to the police information check office to get my criminal background checked. You see, I start a new job on Monday!

But why do I need to have my background checked? I’ll be working with children, the elderly, and disabled. Since I have a lot of experience with children, that’s no problem.

But that’s not what I want to talk about. I have three days until I start work. So, what will I do? Of course, there’s a lot of work around the house this weekend. But other than that, I want to focus a lot on doing a few things:

  1. Watch a lot of Star Trek. That means a lot of posts coming about that.
  2. Work on updating the Authors Answer index.
  3. Contact some people about a special event coming at the end of October on this blog.
  4. Play SimCity 4.
  5. Record as many videos as I can, including a new format for The Star Trek Project.
  6. Start work on an end card for my videos.
  7. Start working on new playlists for my channels.
  8. Start working on updating video descriptions, titles, and tags for search engine optimization.

Is that too much? Anything you’re interested in seeing? Let me know in the comments below!

The Job Search

Looking for a job is one of my least favourite things to do. But it’s something I have to do. I worked for eleven years at my previous job in Japan, so it’s been a long time since I’ve had to change jobs.

Oddly, I enjoy looking at what’s available. It’s like going through a catalogue or browsing a bookstore. Interesting to see what there is, which ones I’d consider. Of course, many of them I don’t qualify for. But I’m putting out applications several times a day.

I’d say my least favourite part is writing cover letters. I have to customise them for each job, and it takes a lot of time to do it. The resume’s done, and I just tweak it for each position, highlighting what they ask for.

My second least favourite part is the wait. After having several resumes sent out, I’ve had one response. And that one was saying that the position I applied for is not available, but please try again in six months. And it was the job I wanted most, actually. But there are some other promising ones that look quite interesting. I just have to wait. And they’ve said they won’t contact anyone until after the closing date for each one. So, I have to wait until then.

At least I have something to occupy myself for the rest of the day today. Get my bank card finally sorted out and visit my daughter’s school for a parents’ orientation. That should be interesting. I’m looking forward to it.

Using LinkedIn More Effectively

I think it’s time to improve my LinkedIn profile and expand my network. I’m going to start using the social network to promote myself professionally, as well as this blog and my writing. But I’m thinking about how to do that.

First of all, if you’re interested in connecting with me, you can find my profile here and add me as a connection.

Secondly, I need to flesh out my profile. That includes past jobs, responsibilities, write more about my education, and more. But another thing I’m thinking about doing is starting a group related to this blog. But what should I do with it? Should I make it about this blog? Or should it be about Authors Answer? What do you think? Let me know in the comments below.
