The Problem With Social Media

I have a very specific problem with social media. And it has a lot to do with why I stopped doing VEDA. I was so motivated about posting a video every day in April, but then one of social media’s most irritating problems interfered.

In recent months, YouTube has been tweaking things in their search algorithms, as well as how they push out videos to people. It’s the latter issue I have problems with. You see, they changed how subscribers see videos of channels they subscribe to. When you click on the subscribe button for a channel, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll see each and every video of theirs as they’re published on the subscription feed.  This has been verified by several of my subscribers, saying that they saw only a few of my videos or even none of my VEDA videos in their subscription feed. I talk about it in this video:

And you know what? I checked for myself if I’m receiving all videos of people I subscribe to, and I’m not. There are some very popular channels I subscribe to that I’m not seeing in my subscription feed, either.

But you know, YouTube isn’t the only place I have problems with their feeds. On Facebook, it defaults to Top Stories, which are often stories I’ve already read, and I never see posts from the majority of people I’m friends with. The option to see most recent posts is still there, but it never defaults to it. I want to see most recent.

On Instagram, it has some algorithm that shows what Instagram thinks I want to see. It used to show the most recent, but now there isn’t even an option for that. I miss most of the pictures of people I follow.

On Twitter, they all seem quite random, rather than showing most recent.

Social media, can you please just let us see all posts in chronological order? Please?

Facebook Booktubers Group Is Now Live!

I’ve started the Booktubers Facebook group! It’s a closed group for now, so you need to request to join. To join, you should be one of the following:

  1. A Booktuber
  2. Someone interested in becoming a Booktuber
  3. A book lover who loves to watch Booktube videos

It’s a place where we can share our videos, talk about making videos (tips and tricks), and talk about books! Self-promotion is welcome and encouraged. The whole purpose is to share our videos, channels, and discuss books.

Here’s the video I made announcing the group on YouTube.

So, who’s interested in joining? Come and have some fun with us!

I Might Start a Facebook Booktube Group

I’ve searched and searched, but I can’t find one! I’m talking about a Facebook Booktubing group. Well, that’s not entirely true. I’ve found groups for Booktubers in Brazil, Mexico, and Uruguay, but none for Booktubing in general. I was a bit surprised. There are Booktuber lists on Twitter, but very little on Facebook.

So, I’m thinking about starting a group on Facebook where Booktubers can discover new Booktubers and share their videos. My thought is to keep it as a public group so anyone can join, including people who are just interested in watching the videos. However, I worry about people who join and spam the group. Maybe there should be an approval process? What do you think? Let me know in the comments below if you’d be interested in something like this and whether it should be public or private.

Should You Directly Sell Your Books on Social Media?

When you go on Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus, do you enjoy reading ads? Probably not. This has been one of my main problems with how I use social media. That’s changing, and I’ve seen the results. While I do publicize my blog posts on social media, I’ve been sharing/retweeting others’ posts, as well as just talking and socialising on social media. On Twitter, that’s resulted in more than doubling the rate at which I gain followers. I don’t use it as an advertising platform anymore. I found this recording of a Google Hangout by Author Hub, and it has some good advice about using social media to sell books.

What do you think? And how do you like Ashley Hewitt’s moustache? Let me know in the comments below.

Improving My Social Media Presence

One of the most important parts of being a self-published author is marketing. And one of the best ways to market is by using social media. But you have to have a pretty good reach and a lot of luck getting people to share your book. At the moment, I’m not published, but I am often marketing my blog posts and videos. I need to improve how I use social media.

Twitter

Today, I’m starting with Twitter. The potential of Twitter is great. Although I have only 3,310 followers, if someone with twice as many followers retweets one of my tweets, my audience grows drastically. It’s a dream for someone who’s marketing their own content for it to go viral. But how do you do that? Well, you need to either have an influencer retweet your tweets or become an influencer on Twitter. These people have a lot of followers who love to share their Tweets. I found a couple resources which seem to be pretty useful. First, there’s a website that provides a list of websites that help you find influencers. The second one is a website that gives you forty steps to become an influencer. I’m going to be trying these out.

What I’ve begun doing is interacting more with my followers. Talking to them, retweeting them, and liking their tweets. If they’re a new follower, I retweet one of their recent tweets. I plan on starting up some lists, as well. And I want to find some influencers who regularly interact with their followers.

YouTube

This is my second focus at the moment. I’m going to be setting up my channel to be more orderly, so there are several sections on my main page that make it more organised and easier to find certain content. I’ll be making videos more regularly, too. I’ll be sharing my videos on social media, and I’ll be commenting on others’ videos.

Facebook

I’m still working out how to increase the popularity of my Facebook page, but I plan on interacting more and providing more interesting content that you don’t find on the blog.

Those are the top three social media sites I use. There are others, of course, and I regularly use them, but I don’t focus as much attention on them as these three. You can only spend so much time using social media, so you have to choose the ones you have the best results from.

Do you have any tips for using social media? What works for you? Let me know in the comments below.

Let’s Share Our Social Media Links

Are you using social media? Well, then why not share them and gain some new followers? It’s been a while since I’ve done this on this blog, so I thought it was time to do it again. Here are my social media links:

Twitter: @jaydeejapan

With 3293 followers at the moment, this has my largest following. More than this blog! But it’s such an easy way to communicate with me. Please follow!

YouTube: Jay Dee Archer

With 55 subscribers, this is probably one of my least followed. I have a lot of very interesting videos to come, especially if you like Japan, books, and sometimes general silliness. Please subscribe!

Facebook: Jay Dee Archer (official author Facebook page)

It has 73 likes, and could definitely use more. If you use Facebook, why not follow me there? I usually do blog updates, but I plan to have more discussions, and it’s an easy way to talk to other followers.

Google Plus: Jay Dee Archer

With 70 followers, though more than 70,000 views, it’s not the most popular social media option, but it does get plenty of views. Please add me to your circles!

LinkedIn: Jay Dee Archer

I have only 48 connections, as this is the social media website I have used the least. However, it is a professional social media website, and I’m trying to establish myself more there. If you’re on LinkedIn, connect with me!

Instagram: @jaydeejapan

With 427 followers, this is probably my third biggest following anywhere. It’s all photos of Japan at the moment, though photos in Canada will come soon. Using Instagram? Follow me!

Patreon: Jay Dee Archer

I just started this, so I have no followers or patrons. It does include a blog, so whether you become a patron or not, you can read public posts that I make. So, please follow! And if you like, become a patron.

Now it’s your turn. In the comments below, leave your social media links. Check other people’s links, as well. Follow people! But also share your blog or website’s address. Follow as many people as you like. And I also ask you to do one more thing: share this post and get the word out. Let’s have a social media sharing party!
