So Much Happening!

I am not dead! But I feel like I’ve mostly disappeared from a lot of social media, though I do talk on Twitter and Facebook regularly. I have news, though. And this is something I’ve been hoping for since returning to Canada from Japan.

I won’t be mysterious about this. I’ve returned to teaching English! I taught English for 11 years in Japan, and now I’m starting again in Canada. The focus is on business people this time, and I’ll have to help develop a lot of the curriculum, so it’s going to be an interesting challenge.

Due to the hours of this job, I have less opportunity to record videos, unfortunately. And since I got a new car last month, my commute isn’t a one hour bus ride. Unfortunately, I get less time for reading, because I often read on my commute. I’ll figure out ways to get reading in, and I might do it during lunch breaks.

I still have so much I want to do: write, read, make videos. I’ll find the time for them all. And this blog, too. When I was living in Japan, this was my big project. This was my baby (other than my daughter). I devoted a lot of time on this blog, and there is absolutely no way I would let it die. While I’m settling into my new job, I’ll probably be busy with preparations, but once everything is routine, I’ll have time to get back to everything I enjoy doing. I know I’ve said I’d be back to blogging earlier this year, but I found I was getting tired and unmotivated about so many things. Now, I feel energy again. I’m definitely back, and soon!

*taps the mic* Hello?

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I guess you deserve an explanation. To put it simply, the past month has been unusual. Life intervened. Many things happened back to back that were both unexpected and expected. I won’t go into too many details, but this is the tl;dr version:

Emergency hospitalization (not me!), new job, short trip, and new puppy!

The puppy!

Mostly, I’ve had to do a lot of running around, adjusting to a new schedule, and many other things. But I have to say this:

This blog is not ending!

So, what’s going on then? Where’s Authors Answer? There are still three more Authors Answer for October not posted, but they will be. I didn’t announce it publicly, but Authors Answer is on a hiatus until the New Year, as I try to figure out what direction to take it. It’s getting more and more difficult to ask questions. Have they all been asked? No, but they’re very difficult to think of. The final Authors Answer of the year is a big one, though. Look forward to that one!

If you’re a subscriber to my YouTube channel, then you know I’ve been somewhat active there. I haven’t been as consistent as I should be, but that has a lot to do with what’s been going on. I’ve also been in the planning stages of a new series for my science channel, which I hope will be well-received and popular. I’ll update you this weekend on what I’ve posted on YouTube.

I also have an office now! This means I should be able to do some writing in privacy, at least during certain times of the day. I’d like to get a couple short stories out in the coming months while I’m working on Journey to Ariadne and my first novel. Progress!

With all that said, how about you? What have you been up to lately?

Week in Review – October 2, 2016

Things sure are interesting lately. I started my new job this past week, and so far, I’m loving it! I’ve only done training, but everyone has been great. I love the atmosphere at work. On the other hand, my knee started acting up a couple days ago. Today, it’s swelling up, and it’s quite stiff. It’s an old injury bugging me because of the cooler weather. But let’s see what went on this week!

Reading

Thanks to the new job and the long commute, I’ve been able to read more than before. I’m now at 74% in Redemption Ark, by Alastair Reynolds. With at least three days of work this week, I’ll be able to read a lot more. I may actually finish this book next week!

Writing

I ended up having very little time and privacy again.

Videos

I’ve been working a lot on doing SEO (search engine optimization) for my videos. I still have a lot to do, though. On my main channel, I posted 7 videos. On my vlog channel, I posted another 6 videos. I haven’t done a daily vlog this past week, but nearly. Going to work on keeping that pace, though.

Patreon

Nothing. Major revamp coming!

The Blog

Authors Answer reached 100 questions! It’s a major milestone, and I’m so happy we’ve been able to do it for so long. The end of this month will mark 2 years of Authors Answer.

Looking at the Month in Review, the stats have been getting worse. I know the problem, and I think I know how to recover. I need better blog posts, and I’ll be posting videos on only digest posts each week. I’d like more written and photographic content on the blog, which is what was the strength of this blog. I also need to reach out again, visit other blogs and comment on them. Find new blogs and comment on them. Get back to networking. I’ve been concentrating so much on YouTube that I’ve been neglecting those aspects of blogging.

Studying

Does reading four manuals for work count?

The Next Week’s Goals

Vlog a lot, blog a lot, and focus on marketing both the blog and YouTube channels. I also hope to take it easy on my knee to let it heal up. I really don’t need it to be hurting on Wednesday and Thursday, when I’ll be doing plenty of standing and walking. And of course, lots of reading!

How was your week?

Planetarium Software

I found some really good free planetarium software. It’s called Stellarium. Today, I was able to use this software, but I’m going to download it and use it at home.

You see, I’m going to be using this software at work extensively. This should give you an idea about what I’m going to be doing. When I said I’ll be using my university degree in my job, I meant it. I’ll be educating people on astronomy and physics. But that’s not all. There’s something else I’m not telling you, and I think that will remain a secret for now. Sorry!

What I’ve been able to do with this software is look at stars, nebulae, galaxies, planets, and the Moon. I’ve looked at the movement of Jupiter’s moons over time, watched the Moon’s phases, and examine the night sky around 100,000 years in the past and future. There’s a lot more I can do, and I’ll explore it as much as I can before I start using it at work.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I’m finally using my university degree in a job! Do you use your degree in your job?

I’m Tired

I’m really tired tonight. I’m not sure what made me tired, but it was a very busy day.

You see, I had my orientation and training for my new job today. Long commute, but it allows me to read a lot more. That’s good. The training and orientation were a lot of fun. Most relaxing and enjoyable training I’ve ever had. Everyone is very nice and the job looks very fun. I’m looking forward to working and the rest of my training this week and next week. It’s definitely going to be interesting.

But was it the training that made me tired? Maybe it was the bus ride. There was a lot of information, and I still have a lot to read. That could’ve made me tired, too.

I still have two videos to edit and post, as well as another blog post. Time to get busy!

Week in Review – September 25, 2016

A couple very big things happened in the past week. One is very big, the other is something I just decided to do, but it’s still big to me. One is offline, the other is online. The offline thing is I got a new job! The online thing is a daily vlog. I’ll talk more about that in the video section.

Reading

I’m definitely not finishing this book this month. I’m only at 69% in Redemption Ark. But since I’m going to work tomorrow, and have quite a long commute, I should get plenty of reading done.

Writing

I thought I’d do a bit of work on this, but never got around to it.

Videos

Big week of videos. On my main channel, I made 7 videos. On my vlog channel, I made another 7 videos. I was doing a daily vlog, and I did it successfully. I may continue, but that depends on how things go over the next week.

Patreon

Nothing. Major revamp coming!

Languages

A little work on French, but not much else.

The Blog

I had yet another big milestone. I hit 1,500 followers! Big number! This week, I’ll be hitting another milestone, but I’ll talk about that next Sunday.

Of course, you’ve probably noticed a lot of videos in the past 3 months. I’m thinking I’m going to have to get back to doing mainly text blog posts again. If you want to watch the videos, I’ll be doing some digest posts, I think.

Studying

Nothing, but I think I’ll have to do a bit for my new job.

The Next Week’s Goals

This is a big question. As my job starts tomorrow, and the real regular work starts on October 8, I’m not sure how much I’ll be working over the next two weeks. My posting schedule will remain the same. What’s difficult is video-making. I may have less time to make videos in the location that I use at the moment. I may have to try somewhere else. But we’ll see.

I’m going to be getting to work on updating the Authors Answer Index page and I should do a new Star Trek Project page, as well.
