It’s Spring! The Jay Dee Show 29

Feels good to be making regular videos again. I didn’t upload a lot, but they are pretty regular booktube videos. I was able to upload 3 videos, all to my main channel. I’m going to do a quick vlog for the science channel tomorrow, and resume regular uploads for it.

On my main channel, there are a couple regular videos plus a new tag I dreamed up while out walking. Let’s take a look.

I started off with my monthly wrap-up and TBR video. Excited about one of the books I’ll be reading soon.

Since it’s spring, and I really like seeing the colour green popping up everywhere, I created the Spring Green Book Tag. It’s an original!

And finally, the return of Authors Answer. This time, I talk about the books I’m writing.

Coming up in the next week will be some new science videos, as well as more Star Trek! I’m looking forward to that.

Which video did you enjoy the most? Let me know in the comments below.

NaNoWriMo 2016

Am I crazy? No, I’m just a guy trying to write a book. I’m going to be participating in NaNoWriMo this year!

NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month, where you have 30 days to write a 50,000 novel or at least 50,000 words toward a novel. It takes place from November 1st to 30th.

I’ve figured now that I live in a house where I can go somewhere quiet in the morning or late evening, I can do some writing. All I need to do is write at least 1,667 words per day, which is achievable. I’ve done it before, but not for 30 straight days.

I’ll be working on completing Journey to Ariadne, which may or may not be 50,000 words. If it’s less, I’ll start on the first Ariadne novel, or portions of it. It’s a natural continuation of Journey to Ariadne, as this web serial is a prequel to the main story.

I talked about this on my YouTube channel, as well. So, check that out below:

Are you participating in NaNoWriMo? Let me know in the comments below with your profile. You can go here to see my profile. Let’s be buddies!

I Am a Writer

I decided to talk a bit about my writing on YouTube. Watch the video below.

There are a couple places I mentioned that you can read my writing. Here they are:

Journey to Ariadne is available on my official website.

Ariadne stories from A to Z is available here.

Expect more in the future. I’d like to work on some editing, then I can get more parts of Journey to Ariadne online. I already have three more parts written, but they have not been critiqued.

Comments are always welcome!

How to Resume Writing After a Hiatus

One of these days, I’m going to get back to writing. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t have any privacy to be able to do any serious writing at the moment. But, I will. To prepare, I need to do a few things.

Have a place

When the room in the basement is ready for me to put my computer on the desk and a chair to sit on, I’ll be there! Once it’s all ready, I can start writing.

Re-read what I’ve written

I need to get myself back into my world. I have to completely reacquaint myself with the story. Actually, I don’t need to do that, since I know it by heart. However, by reading, I get my mind back into it, and I can rediscover the feeling.

Prepare my maps

I have a lot of maps. By going over the maps, I can explore my world again and live there in my mind. There’s still a lot to develop.

Notes, notes, notes

I need to review my notes and write more notes. I need to write notes on all the characters, all the places, all the story lines, everything.

Update my author website

I need to add some content to my author website. In particular, I want to get the Ariadne Encyclopedia started. It’ll be my online reference guide for the world. I plan to have character profiles, country profiles, and star system information available.

Write and edit

I actually have several parts written but not up on the website yet. However, I need to get them critiqued and edit them. I also need to write my novel, not just Journey to Ariadne.

Keep everyone updated

I want to keep my readers updated in several ways. One is, through this blog. Another is on YouTube. Another is through my Facebook page. And the other big one is Twitter. Eventually, once I have a Goodreads author page, I’ll be updating that, too.

There’s a lot to do, but I’ll get it done. If you write, what do you do to prepare? Let me know in the comments below.

A Little Thing Called Writing – My Plans

It’s about time I talk about writing, right? Especially my writing. Well, some things are being done:

  • Got myself an office… though I need to make it usable.
  • Got myself a Patreon. Please support my work at my Patreon page! Also, video here. For information about the rewards of being a patron, check out my Patreon page for levels of support.

The time I have to write depends on these things:

  • Work
  • Family
  • Interruptions

So, with that out of the way, here are my plans. There’s a lot to do.

Journey to Ariadne

Get back to work on this. I have some parts already finished, which means I still need to get them edited. That’ll be up to the nice people over at Critique Circle. Once they’ve been edited, they’ll be up on my official author’s page. I’ll also give early access to them for anyone who is a Patreon patron.

The first Ariadne novel

Outlining will begin! I’ll be spending more time on the novel than on Journey to Ariadne. Why? Well, the novel is bigger and each part of Journey is quite short and requires far less time to write. Simple, isn’t it?

Artwork and sketches

I’ll be doing a lot of concept artwork and sketches, especially maps. These will be available on my author’s page. However, early access to them will be available to some of my Patrons.

Worldbuilding

I will resume my worldbuilding posts, and there will be many. I hope for a couple a month, as they are very involved and complex posts to write. Here’s what’s to come.

And that is about it. There’s a lot to do, and with the privacy of my own office, I can finally achieve it. Some things to consider for the future are beta readers, editors (Patreon should help out), cover art (actually, the first book’s already got a cover artist, and I love the way it looks!), and making sure I figure out how to publish on Kindle, Smashwords, and Createspace.

Any comments and questions are appreciated!

Mission Statement – Writing

The third part of my mission statement has to do with the biggest aspect of this blog — writing. I use this blog to talk about writing, show my own writing, and direct your attention to my official blog for my writing.

With my efforts to refocus and organise everything for the new year, much of this will be unchanged for writing, but I will work on a regular series. Here are some of the things you can expect to see.

Worldbuilding

I’ve already done a few articles on worldbuilding, but have been silent on that for a while. I’m going to work on getting a weekly or biweekly series on worldbuilding going. You can see the current articles here, and some plans for future worldbuilding articles here. There’s a lot to write about.

Flash Fiction

I haven’t done much of this lately, either. I plan to get back into it and try a weekly flash fiction story about pretty much anything.

Ariadne

Journey to Ariadne hasn’t seen any progress lately, but that’s mainly due to trying to focus on the move to Canada. After the move, I should have a lot more time and more privacy. I’ll be doing a lot more then. However, there are some other things that I’ll start writing up for the official blog, though I will link to them from here. This is what you can expect to see:

  • Character profiles
  • Country profiles (though this will be limited to physical geography for the time being)
  • Animal and plant life
  • Artwork

Other Writing

I will post about writing as usual about various topics. There’s no particular focus here. Mainly what comes to mind.

What are you interested in seeing? Any suggestions? Let me know in the comments below.

Writing Controversial Characters

Today, I did some work on Journey to Ariadne part six, and it’s mainly about a rather prominent character I’m introducing. She is somewhat controversial. She’s not just loud and opinionated, but she’s also not afraid to tell people they’re morally bankrupt. You see, this part of the story involves religion. But not just any religion, one that developed as an offshoot of Christianity in the late 21st century. One that becomes very controversial.

As I wrote it, I wondered if I’ve gone too far or if it’s too mild. I’ll see how it goes when it’s critiqued. I’m looking forward to that.

Just so you know, the religion doesn’t exist, but is a kind of extremely fundamentalist Christianity. It won’t play a major part in the story, but is important in establishing the character’s background.

So, who is interested in it?
