Authors Answer 90 – Writing in Another Language

All of us are fluent in English. Most, if not all, of us have studied a language to varying degrees in school. But have any of us achieved enough ability in those languages to actually write books in them? Before you read on, take a guess. How many, out of ten people, can write in a language other than English? Let’s see if your guess is correct.  This week’s question was asked by Loren Killdeer.

320px-Modern-ftn-pen-cursiveQuestion 90 – Do you write outside of your original language?

Eric Wood

Seeing as I only know English and minuscule pieces of French, my original language is all I write in. Perhaps one day my stories will be translated into hundreds of languages?

Elizabeth Rhodes

I can only write in English. I don’t know nearly enough of another language to make the attempt.

Jean Davis

I have days where it’s difficult to write in my own language, so no.

D. T. Nova

No. If I ever publish in multiple languages I will need a translator.

Paul B. Spence

No. Rhyrhan is such a literal language, and difficult to spell with our alphabet…

S. R. Carrillo

How I wish I could~ I’ve been trying to spruce up my Spanish lately, and I’ve even attempted to read a book in Spanish, but I’m far from fluent. Maybe, one day, I’d like to be able to write a book in Spanish, I think. I may make that a life goal mwahah.

H. Anthe Davis

Alas, I’ve never been fluent enough in another language to try to write in it.  I’ve created fantasy languages, and I’ve dreamed in Spanish and Japanese while I was learning them, but I don’t know them well anymore.

Gregory S. Close

No, unless you count the fictional ones!  I do dabble in Aulden, Underkin and Ancient Andu’ai.

Tracey Lynn Tobin

Nope! While I did take several years of French classes throughout my education, I don’t know nearly enough actually write in French, and I only know little snips and random phrases from other languages. It’s English-only for me!

Jay Dee Archer

I’m a language enthusiast. I’ve studied French for eight years and lived in Japan for eleven years. However, I have not achieved a high enough proficiency in either language to be able to write in those languages. Even if I were conversational in either language, my vocabulary wouldn’t be enough to write well. It would also take an incredibly long and frustrating time for me to write in another language, unless I were fully fluent. So no, I only write in English. I would love to write in another language, though.

How about you?

Are you bilingual or multilingual? Are you able to write in more than one language well? Let us know in the comments below.

Week in Review – July 17, 2016

The week ended in an interesting way. Really, it wasn’t very expected, considering how obsessed I, my wife, and sister got with something. And it was quite hilarious to see others doing the same thing all over the city. What is it? Playing Pokemon GO! There were many people driving to Pokestops to get Pokeballs and Pokemon. Uh, I’m level 6 now. Anyway, on to the updates!

Reading

I’m now up to 52% on Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds. I’ve made more progress! But still too slow.

Writing

Nothing!

Patreon

I haven’t even checked. Honestly, I don’t expect much for a while.

Languages

I did more studying, but my focus has shifted back to French. I need to make sure I continue with Esperanto, as well. Looks like I’ll be doing some language test drives soon, too.

Videos

I think the quality of my videos is improving. I actually did eight videos in the past week! Looks like I’m on pace to do nine this coming week. Check out my channel and watch! And subscribe, too. I’m trying to add some humour to the videos.

The Blog

I actually had some more views this past week! But the second half became quieter again. One thing that’s interesting is that next month’s Authors Answer is going to be totally different than what we’ve done before. Creativity is the main feature! I hope you enjoy it.

Studying

Nothing!

The Next Week’s Goals

My focus on YouTube will continue, but I’m going to try put more energy in the blog and blogging community. Book reviews are a priority for me this week. Must do it! In general, I’m trying to engage people more. And hopefully, a couple loose ends will be tied up with our move to Canada. It’ll feel great to have them done! And finally getting caught up in social media.

How was your week? Let me know in the comments below!

Language Test Drives

Several months ago, I did a few language test drives for languages that are available on Duolingo. Since then, there have been several new languages, though three of them use different alphabets. I’m thinking about doing some more language test drives, but I want your opinion.

It’s not easy to choose a language, especially when they’re significantly different than English. So, please vote for which language you’d like to see me attempt first.

Ukrainian and Russian use the Cyrillic alphabet, while Hebrew uses the Hebrew alphabet. Surprisingly Vietnamese uses the Roman alphabet, as does Hungarian.

Let me know which one you voted for a why in the comments below. Thanks!

Week in Review – July 10, 2016

It’s been quite an interesting week. I’m babysitting the dog every night because some of the family is on a trip right now. He cries a lot at night. Right now, he’s licking himself while crying. It sounds very, very strange. Other than that, I’ve made some progress on a few things book and language-related!

Reading

I’ve read a bit more, and am now at 48% in Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds. Still, not enough read, because I’m babysitting the dog, and he’s been crying if I leave the room.

Writing

Nope.

Patreon

Also, nothing happening. We’ll see if it improves when I start writing again and have a bigger YouTube following.

Languages

Progress in two languages! Not only did I study more Esperanto, but finally got back into studying French again.

Videos

Another six videos posted! I’m pretty consistent on my channel. And I reached 100 subscribers! I had one of my best days in views recently, too. I have some more interesting things coming this week.

The Blog

Summer is slow. The stats are really low this month, despite the regular posting. Everyone’s going out! And thanks to Pokemon Go, I bet even more people will be going out.

Studying

Nope.

The Next Week’s Goals

Hoping for 7 videos on YouTube, a couple actual book reviews, and I’ll be talking a bit about the insanity that’s been going on in the US. A bit off topic, but I have a reason for it. Oddly enough, it is book related in a way. Other than that, I have a busy week ahead. And we’ll have a visitor staying with us for the weekend!

Week in Review – July 3, 2016

July already. And I’m really noticing a slowdown in the activity on the blog. Views are down, comments are down. I think people are going out more. I’m expecting summer to be slower than usual. Hoping things pick up, though. But let’s find out what happened this week.

Reading

I did a bit more reading. Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds is now at 47%. I think I’ll read a bit more tonight, though.

Writing

Again, not happening until I have privacy and quiet.

Patreon

Nothing happening here. Again, I don’t expect anything until my YouTube audience is larger and I have some writing going on.

Languages

I’ve done a bit of work on Esperanto, and close to getting to the next level on Duolingo. A new language is now available there, too. It’s Hungarian! I need to do some language test drives.

Videos

In the past week, I posted six videos to my channel! Seems that’s my regular pace, since I did the same the previous week. My subscribers are steadily increasing, though not at a really quick rate. I’m approaching 100 subscribers, though!

The Blog

We’ve started a new month with Authors Answer, and we’re down one member. If one more decides to retire, then I’ll be asking for more people to help contribute. I like to keep it at ten contributors or more. We’re at ten now. But it seems we only lose one contributor every six months. And I can’t believe question 100 is approaching in about three months!

Studying

Heh. No.

The Next Week’s Goals

Another six videos, possibly some reviews, too. I’ve been wondering if I should try a couple videos some days. I should be starting Authors Answer on video this week, too. On the blog, I’ll push myself to get a couple reviews done. For reading, I’ll make sure I read every day. I need to make a more consistent effort for these things.

How was your week? Let me know in the comments!

Week in Review – June 26, 2016

Well, it’s been quite the week on the internet. You’ve probably noticed a continued focus on YouTube videos. I’ve done a lot. And the channel has grown! But don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten the blog. Let’s find out what happened this week.

Reading

I’ve been reading! I’m now at 45% in Redemption Ark, by Alastair Reynolds. I’ve felt a lot more motivation to read now that I’m hiding away in various places during the day to read.

Writing

If I could hide away to write, I would. It’s easier to get away and read, because interruptions don’t destroy my train of thought. For writing, I must have quiet and solitude for a good amount of time.

Patreon

As I expected, I’m getting nothing yet. But as I said before, I expect to get something once I’ve started writing again and have gained a considerably larger number of YouTube subscribers.

Languages

I’ve done a bit more with Esperanto, and I’ve been telling myself I really should split my studying time with Esperanto and French.

Videos

Here’s where the news is the biggest. My subscriber count has increased quite a bit. Nothing amazing, but it’s a lot more than it was a week ago. I also published six videos. Some do well, some don’t. I’m still discovering what kind of videos attract viewers, and what don’t. The other is that I’ve become a YouTube Partner. If I get to 1000 subscribers, I get some extra perks.

The Blog

The blog continues! It’s been a slow month, though a little more traffic this past week. But it seems summer is often slow for views because people are going out more.

Studying

Nope!

The Next Week’s Goals

Perfecting my video editing skills, making myself appear more outgoing on camera, and doing some of the more popular tags and types of videos. I plan on doing a multiple part series of unboxing my books. Most of my books are stuck in boxes and some are in the basement. I have to dig out some boxes in the basement. Also, June will be ending this week, so the Month in Review is coming. I really, really should do some reviews this week. Three book reviews and a TV episode impression. Maybe one a day. That’ll take us to the end of the month.

Week in Review – June 19, 2016

Happy Father’s Day! And also, this is my 7th anniversary on WordPress! This blog was started in 2012, but my first blog, Jay Dee in Japan, was started in June 2009. I rarely update it these days, though. Anyway, a lot has happened in the past week, and it’s mostly on YouTube. Let’s find out what happened.

Reading

I actually read something! I’m now at 42% in Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds. Expect more reading soon.

Writing

Again, I haven’t been able to do much. No quiet place for me to write.

Patreon

Again, nothing to report. I doubt much will happen until my YouTube channel really takes off or I have new writing to show you.

Languages

A little Esperanto studied. But I didn’t get much done.

Canada

Our final box has arrived! Finally!

Videos

I’m on fire! Five videos in one week! Four are for Booktubing and one is for Japan. I suggest you go to my channel and check them out. Also, the number of subscribers has increased quite a bit in the past week. I’m pretty pleased with that. And I’m curious to see where I’ll be at the end of the month.

The Blog

I keep blogging away, of course. Have to remind myself that I have four reviews to write. That’s three books and one TV episode. The TV episode is going to be an impression, rather than a full review.

Studying

I have to stop adding courses unless I’m going to be able to spend the time to focus on them.

The Next Week’s Goals

It’s going to be another big week on YouTube, I think. I’m aiming for at least five videos. I think I’ll also aim to have a review or two done. Need to catch up. Also, there is a page I need to work on. It’s the Authors Answer Index, which as the list of questions and links to the answers. Must get up to date.

How was your week? Let me know in the comments below!

Week in Review – June 12, 2016

It’s been a very interesting week. I’ve done plenty of work on my YouTube channel, and the results have been immediate. I’ll tell you all about it in his week’s update.

Reading

I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to set a time for me to read, and try do about 30 minutes a day at least. I’m still at 41% for Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds.

Writing

Until I have the office sorted, I can’t do much, unfortunately. Or I could move my computer to the kitchen sometimes, but I still don’t get much privacy there.

Patreon

Nothing yet, and I don’t expect much this month. At least not until my YouTube channel gets more popular and I get some writing done.

Languages

I did a bit more of Esperanto. But I’m still a bit slow with that.

Canada

More swimming done. But the biggest thing is that many of the boxes we’ve been expecting have finally arrived! Woohoo!

Videos

This is the biggest news of the week, I think. I started Booktubing! And that single video has had so many more comments than any other video I’ve ever done, and in only a couple days. I’ve also gained seven new subscribers in only three days. I need to watch more videos of Booktubers. I might get some good book suggestions, discover new video ideas, and talk to a lot of people. Sounds fun! And so far, everyone has been very friendly. One thing about this is that most Booktubers are young women. Not so many men or older people. But I won’t let that deter me. Anyway, I posted four new videos with plenty more to come this week.

The Blog

Something I’ve noticed about stats this week is that June is slow! I’ve been posting as usual, but the views have dropped a fair amount. But summer tends to be a bit slow on the blogs. Coming this week (actually, probably later today) is an impression of the first episode of Sherlock. And also, I need to get three book reviews done. Need to catch up!

Studying

I’ve been a bad student. The online course I signed up for I haven’t even looked at. At least it’s free.

The Next Week’s Goals

As I said before, I hope to get some reviews done on the blog, as well as several videos. What you can expect for videos include one or two Japan-related videos and a couple book-related videos. Or maybe even more.

Although a bit unrelated, I need to make a blog post on Bob Ross.

How about you? How was your week? Let me know in the comments below.

Week in Review – June 5, 2016

Another week has come and gone, and a lot happened in the last week. Some good and some really not at all good. But I’ve also started focusing on something and have already seen some positive results. Let’s find out what happened.

Reading

Nothing at all. I caught a cold and felt so tired most nights that I didn’t feel I could read. I’m at 41% on Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds. I need to get working on this!

Writing

Big setback here. We had a sump pump failure in the basement with a bit of flooding. It’s been repaired, but the office will be closed until the flooring is replaced in one corner.

Patreon

Not unexpected, but I’m still at 0 patrons and $0. I don’t expect much until I’m producing more videos and gaining more subscribers there. Also, once I start writing and getting the new material out, I should start getting some.

Languages

I worked on some more Esperanto. I should get back into French, too. That’s my primary focus.

Canada

We went swimming at the rec centre, and my daughter loved it. We’ll definitely go again this week.

Videos

I have three new videos out this week, but one is only available on my Patreon page. But go check out the public videos on my channel. But the biggest news with the channel is that I’ve started making improvements to the channel, as well as coming changes to the videos themselves. I’ll be using cards and annotations far more often to direct viewers to different things while watching. And video production is going to pick up, especially with Japan-related videos. But I’ll also be Booktubing!

The Blog

I talked a lot about social media again. But you’ve already seen that with the Video section above.

Studying

Started a course on the British Empire on FutureLearn, except that I haven’t even looked at it. I guess I should tonight.

The Next Week’s Goals

I’m going to do a lot of work on my YouTube channel this week. I can’t do much about writing until the office is put back together. So, I’ll focus on my other creative outlet, other than this blog. Thinking about collaborations for YouTube, actually. Got something in mind, but I need to talk to the people I’d like to collaborate with. Keeping it bookish, actually.

How was your week? Let me know in the comments below.

Week in Review – May 29, 2016

Another week down, more stuff happened. Of course stuff happened, but not everything I hoped to happen happened. But let’s see what actually did happen!

Reading

I’m at 41% at Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds still. I set a new reading order for the new books I received last week, though.

Writing

Turns out I didn’t get any writing done. Caught a cold, and haven’t felt up to it. I’m getting over it, though. I’m going to work on the office tomorrow morning and then I can start writing.

Patreon

A week after starting up Patreon, it’s still at $0. But then, I haven’t had any writing done, which is something that should help. Of course, if you are interested in supporting me, then please head on over to my Patreon page!

Languages

I finally got back into studying again. I did a bit of Esperanto this week.

Canada

My wife’s English lessons have started. We also started exercising at the local recreation centre. This week, the pools should open.

Videos

I got a new video out, and it’s a look at the state of my office. As I said above, I’m going to start working on it tomorrow.

The Blog

I’ve been talking more about writing and books in the past week. I’ve also been focusing a lot on social media, especially Twitter. I’ve seen an increase in the following rate in the past week, which is nice to see.

Studying

I actually signed up for a couple free courses on FutureLearn, one about the British Empire, the other about Japanese philosophy. Sound interesting?

The Next Week’s Goals

Go swimming. At least twice. And I intend on getting my daughter swimming, too. I also plan on writing and getting the next three parts of Journey to Ariadne up for critiques, so I can edit them. I will also be working on the outline of Knights of Ariadne, my first novel. Hoping for a good chance to edit a new video, one that should’ve been made two months ago.

How was your week.
