Hit By the YouTube Subscriber Glitch

Have you heard of the subscriber glitch on YouTube? In a nutshell, what happens is that the moment you upload a video, you lose subscribers. Many big YouTubers have been complaining about this for months. I didn’t complain about it, because it didn’t seem to affect me at all. I had solid subscriber growth. Until about a month ago, that is.

It seems that I lose subscribers as fast as I gain them, and the losses are almost always the very moment I upload a video. You think it may be because someone just didn’t like my video? That may be possible, but it’s happening to far too many people, and the decrease in subs happens the very moment videos are uploaded.

A couple weeks ago, another booktuber sent me a message, saying that she was no longer subscribed to my channel. However, she never unsubscribed from me. She was just suddenly unsubscribed. She subscribed again, and everything is fine. However, many of the people who are unsubscribed never notice it, especially if they watch videos from many different channels.

I personally haven’t noticed being unsubscribed from other channels. However, it’s very possible that I have been unsubscribed. I watch so many channels that it’s easy to miss just one or two.

This problem is something that YouTube seems to be just pushing aside and not properly addressing it. They’ve even commented that they don’t unsubscribe people from other channels. They say that if you’re subscribed, your subscription won’t be removed. But the thing is, people are being unsubscribed without their consent all the time! This is a problem for those who use YouTube for their main income. If they lose subscribers, they lose views. That lowers their revenue. Not good.

If you make YouTube videos, have you been noticing a sudden drop in subscribers when you upload videos? Let me know in the comments below.

A Dirty Situation

This dog gave us a lot of trouble today.

His name is Romeo. He’s my sister’s dog, and he’s sixteen years old. He’s getting on in age, quite deaf, and has bad eyesight. But he’s still quite healthy. Today, he created a very, very dirty situation. Just a warning that this story may become graphic.

Romeo was outside doing his thing not so long ago. When he came in, we noticed he had a huge piece of poop stuck to the underside of his tail. We immediately put him back outside, and I went to get some paper towels. I followed him outside, but he ran away from me. I think he knew what I was about to do. I wiped off as much poop as I could, but there was still a lot stuck to his backside.

I brought him in and took him upstairs to the bathtub. I sprayed his ass with the shower and chunks of poop came off. But he was fighting. He was very hard to control, and I couldn’t get him to stand still. I was wearing gloves, so I tried grabbing pieces of poop off his butt, but it wasn’t easy. He tucked his tail between his legs, so I couldn’t get easy access to the poop. I needed three hands! So, I enlisted the service of my wife.

My wife came in and held his collar while I pulled up his tail and scrubbed his butt and sprayed off the poop. However, he splashed poopy water into my eyes, and I had to go wash them out. Both my wife and I were wet. I finally got the poop out of his butt, dried him off, and got him out of the bathroom.

My wife and I had wet shirts, the gloves ended up getting wet inside, and I had poopy water in my eyes. Lovely.

He needs a haircut so this doesn’t happen again.

Attempting to Resolve Difficult Matters

To save you a long and boring story which will be related to you after everything is done, my wife’s permanent residency is approved, but there’s a problem we’re dealing with. And also, customs charged us duty charges for one of our boxes. Used clothes and my daughter’s stuffed animals and dolls. Definitely asking for that money back! In the meantime, some amazing clouds!

Obstacles in the Immigration Process

Well, it was bound to happen. We have our first problem with the immigration process.

We received an email today from the Manila office today. I guess that’s the good news. They got the application package. And they looked through it quickly. And they immediately told us they most likely would not approve it because they don’t believe I’ll be living in Canada.

When we applied in the beginning, they needed proof that I would live in Canada when the permanent residency began. Of course, permanent residency starts the moment my wife receives the visa while we’re in Canada, or the moment she arrives in Canada after receiving the visa. So, in either case, they need proof that I’ll be going to Canada with her or before her. They have that in the form of a rental agreement for where we’ll be living.  I guess that’s not enough. But, fear not, we do have something else. Proof of my flight to Canada! We have 45 days to get it to them in Manila, and once that’s done, they will resume processing the application.

I’m not terribly worried. This is just a little setback that can be quickly resolved.

Unexpected Computer Problems

At this moment, my computer is having seizures. Well, it seems like it. The lock screen keeps flashing in desktop mode. It won’t start up properly. So, I’m now doing a system restore to a week ago.

This isn’t the first time this has happened. Damn Windows 8.1. I miss Windows 7.

Well, let’s see if this works.

Update

I’m typing this from my computer, so the restore obviously worked. At first, I restored to the last saved restore point, but that was after the most recent Windows update. The problem was still there. So, I had to restore to a week ago. That worked. Everything seems to work properly now.

The problem I was having was something that happened on another update more than a year ago. I’ve seen a couple of reasons for this issue, such as incompatible video driver and a faulty update that affected the startup program. Turns out my fast startup program was repeatedly running.

Well, hopefully no problems for now. This was originally going to be a temporary replacement computer until I could get a new one after we’ve moved to Canada. I think I’ll keep this computer as a writing computer for when I’m going from place to place or traveling.

New Horizons Glitch – Will We See Pluto?

While the US was celebrating the Fourth of July, New Horizons was getting itself drunk. Well, there was a glitch. With just ten days to go until the encounter with Pluto, New Horizons shut down its main computer and the backup started up, putting the probe in safe mode.

Safe mode isn’t unusual for space probes, but the timing isn’t very good. Well, it’s not so bad, because not many pictures were expected to be taken over the next couple days. However, New Horizons is 4.5 hours away, and any commands will require 9 hours (4.5 hours confirmation). If they can diagnose it quickly, then it should be working properly in the next couple days. If not, it could take a few days to correct.  I really hope it’ll be corrected soon.  I want my Pluto pictures!

The Planetary Society has a very good write-up on this.

Bumps in the Road to Canada

320px-Flag_of_Canada.svgInevitably, we’re going to have problems with our paperwork.  But we can’t afford problems.  We need them to be perfect.

To begin with, I’ll just update you on what we’ve done so far.  We got our pictures taken!  Mine had to be 5cm x 7 cm, but photo studios don’t do that in Japan, so the embassy said 5 x 5 was okay.  So, I have 2 of them done for my passport renewal.  My wife had 15 done, all 3.5cm x 4.5cm.  9 for her visa application, 5 for her medical exam, and 1 for her passport renewal.  And then my daughter had 2 done, both were 3.5cm x 4.5cm.  Those were for her citizenship certificate application.  And boy was it fun trying to get her to sit still for her picture.  She’s not patient for that kind of thing yet.

Now, for the problem.  As I was reading through the required documents for applying for a family class visa, I noticed one section said that if the applicant has any children who are Canadian citizens (like my daughter is), they require a copy of her citizenship certificate or birth certificate.  Crap.  We’re applying for that next week.  It takes about 9 months for us to get it.  Double crap.  We need it in 3 months.  So, I guess that means we apply for the certificate as an urgent case.  If not, our move to Canada will be delayed by several months, and our daughter can’t start Kindergarten in Canada.

Well, we’ll apply for my passport renewal and my daughter’s citizenship certificate on Thursday at the embassy in Tokyo.  If everything goes well, they’ll say okay to the urgency of our situation.  Wish us luck!
