No Doctor Who!

So, I was going to watch some Doctor Who on Netflix a couple nights ago. Guess what I found out? It was removed on September 15th! There goes my plan to watch Doctor Who.

Why was it removed? I guess it’s supposed to be on Crave TV now. I heard about it, but I haven’t checked their listings.

So, what will I do now? I’ve already started watching The Walking Dead all over again. I’d seen up to the third season, but not all of it. I plan on watching it all and catching up. My Star Trek viewing will not slow down. Actually, I think it should speed up. At the pace I’ve been watching it, it’ll take me years to get through all of the episodes.

I have some other series I should be watching. I should continue with Sherlock and start Firefly. There are movies I need to watch, including Interstellar, The Martian (once I finish the book, which I’m now reading), and more.

Well, before going to bed tonight, I think I’ll watch the next episode of The Walking Dead.

What Will I Read in September?

Hoping to get out of this reading slump in September. My daughter’s starting school, so while she’s learning to read, I’m going to be reading. I hope.

The book I’m reading now should be finished in the next couple weeks. I will work hard on it! And then I’ll move on to something new, one of the books I got earlier this year. Take a look at my to be read list.

So, if I can finish Revelation Space, I’ll move on to N. K. Jemisin’s The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, then Andy Weir’s The Martian. I’m really looking forward to them.

What are you planning to read in September? Let me know in the comments below.

Reading in June and July

As I’ve mentioned before, I really have to start reading more again. I’ve slowed down far too much. The book I’m reading right now has taken me so long to read, but it’s not because of the book. I’m really enjoying it.

I decided to start making videos each month talking about the books I read in the month that just finished and what I’d like to read in the current month. So, here it is:

I feel like I’m going to keep talking about Redemption Ark, but I want to finish it! The next two books are much shorter, and should be a lot easier to get through. And best of all, they’re newer books that I just got. It’ll be great to read more recently written books.

Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments below.

The Martian: Self-published to Book and Movie Deal

Andy Weir’s The Martian is one of those success stories that indie authors love to hear about, or rather, would love to happen to them.

You see, Andy Weir started out by posting chapters of The Martian on his blog for anyone to read for free.  He then decided to sell it for $0.99 on Amazon. Then things got crazy. It was so popular that it got picked up by a traditional publisher, and then within a week, he had a movie deal. And now that the movie’s coming out, it appears that critics are saying this may be one of the best movies of the year.

Wow.

Read about the whole story here. What I wrote above is just a highly condensed version. And here’s the movie trailer.

This should give hope to a lot of indie authors who want to make it big. It can happen. But they have to be realistic. This kind of thing is extremely rare. I would love for something like this to happen to me, of course. I think any indie author would love it.

As for the book (and the movie), the things I hear about it is that the science used in the story is what sets it apart from many other science fiction novels. It uses real science. I love that kind of science fiction. It’s one reason I loved Kim Stanley Robinson’s Red Mars.

Any indie authors out there hoping for Andy Weir-like success?

The Martian

The first trailer for the movie The Martian is now out.  Here it is.

It’s based on a novel by the same name, a novel I really want to read. I absolutely loved Kim Stanley Robinson’s Red Mars. And now this movie comes along. I want to see it so very much. The novel by Andy Weir is highly rated on Goodreads, and is a Goodreads Choice 2014 winner. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

So, Matt Damon is the main character in this movie. Batman vs. Superman is also coming, starring Ben Affleck. These childhood friends have a couple potential blockbuster movies. Who’s going to win? In my mind, The Martian is what I want to see the most.
